Feminist networking is a praxis! Systerserver is a group of people who collectively install, configure & maintain digital and affective infrastructures since the early 2000’s. We imagine a feminist internet; becoming servers, that we can ‘co-create’, involving our bodies, materialities, network skills and knowledges.

A server is not only this technically facilitated node on the network, it is also an (online) space that we enter “as inhabitants, make contributions to, nurture as a safe space and a place for expression and experimentation, a place for taking a role in hacking heteronormativity and patriarchy. A server is a place on the internet that we can share with our intersectional, queer and feminist communities, a place where our data and the contents of our websites is hosted, where we are chatting, storing our stories and imaginaries, and access the multiple online services we need to get organized (mailing lists, calendars, notes,…). To do so we use Free and Open Source Software. However, serving, and becoming a server is not just a neutral relation between two or more computers, it is tied to politics of protocols, of infrastructure, power, responsabilities, dependencies, labour, knowledge, control, etc. What are the politics of self-hosting and being addressable on the internet, by having an IP address? Can we subvert our dependencies on commercial services? Which layer of the internet network we want to dismantle. Who can become a server, who is being served?

During Sunday 11-5pm, we introduce basic command line, architecture of servers, install a distribution system and create access to a collective server of Mz*Baltazhar’s laboratory. Noobs, experts, .. all welcome. Bring your laptop!

We will have 2 follow up sessions (monday/tuesday) with Mz*Baltazhar’s laboratory to implement a running (web)server with a nextcloud instance.
